About these records
PubDB is the human interface to Marjorie, the pub knowledge system of record underneath. Marjorie holds the facts. PubDB finds them, lays them out, and — for people authorised to do so — submits corrections back to Marjorie, which decides whether to apply them.
This deployment is staging. It is a working staging site: the records are real, the deployment is not the public one.
Where the facts come from
Every fact Marjorie holds can carry provenance: which source it was checked against, when, and how certain the reviewer was. Where that exists, this site shows it under the fact itself, in words: verified from the pub's own website on 12 September 2026.
Where it does not exist, the fact is marked not recorded. That is a statement about the record, not about the pub. A pub whose cider status is not recorded may or may not serve real cider; the honest answer is that nobody has checked, and PubDB will not upgrade a gap into an answer.
Nothing on this site is inferred. Distances are calculated from recorded coordinates; grid references are computed from them. Where coordinates are missing, no map, distance or grid reference is shown at all.
What PubDB does not own
- Real cider and perry. These claims are maintained through RealCider, by its editor. PubDB displays them and can find pubs by them, but there is no route here that can change one — deliberately, so that a cider fact has exactly one home.
- Accessibility. Assessed through Marjorie's own accessibility process, with its own evidence rules. PubDB shows the result and cannot edit it.
- Identity and history. Slugs, places, merge history and the audit trail of who changed what belong to Marjorie. A merge or a rename is not a PubDB editing action.
Correcting a record
A correction here is not an edit. It is a proposal: the fields you change, the value you believe is right, where you got it from, when you observed it and how certain you are. Marjorie records it as a pending correction and a moderator decides. Until then, the record is unchanged — so nothing you do can damage a record, and nothing you send is applied without a person agreeing to it.
This is also why a correction needs a source and a date: a fact that arrives without them is one nobody can review later.

A pub that is not here
PubDB can only show what Marjorie holds, so a pub missing from here is missing from the system of record. That is a gap worth reporting rather than a fault on this page — and adding a pub is a Marjorie action, not a correction to an existing record, so there is deliberately no "create" button here.
What is deliberately absent
- Photographs. Marjorie publishes no images for a pub, and there is no photograph service for this site to read from. Rather than a placeholder box, a broken image or a stock picture of a different pub, there is nothing — and no invented caption. When Marjorie publishes images, this site can show them.
- Reviews, ratings and scores. A reference work records what is known, not what was thought of it. There is no ranking here to game and none to be gamed by.
- Visitor tracking. No analytics, no cookies for readers, no profiling. The only cookie this site sets is for an editor session, and only when an editor signs in.
- The full audit trail. Marjorie keeps every correction, who submitted it and which were approved, and its moderators can see all of it. It is not published here, because it includes the identity of people who submit corrections.
How it is built
Marjorie is read live for each record. Search, postcodes, grid references and distances are answered from a derived index — a cache rebuilt from Marjorie, never edited, and safe to delete, because Marjorie remains the only source of truth.
